The Blackwater River begins in Alabama and flows through the panhandle of Florida into the Gulf of Mexico. When I first moved from Texas to Florida, the river served as a landmark to confirm I was making the last stretch of the journey into Florida and was that much closer to my new home. Now, when I return to sunshine state after making a trip to Texas, I look for the Blackwater River -- its flowing waters, the surrounding trees and deep woods -- to mark the time and remind me I have only a few hours left to drive.
Blackwater River begins with this idea of building the momentum to move across the country. It grabs ahold of the rumbling waters that create a current, drawing everything in its path out toward sea. This current of fluttering clarinets and upper woodwinds provides a bed for the lyrical melody first presented in the low, growling bassoons and bass clarinets as it swirls and rises, taking on new colors and shapes. Each iteration builds and grows in excitement toward the ecstatic ending of Blackwater River, marking the final arrival at a new home.
