Reconciliation was commissioned and premiered by Brian Bires in 2016. Written for solo viola, the piece is meant to exhibit two extremes of musicality that seem to be constantly at odds with each other. The music opens with sweet, ascending motions only to be interrupted by harsh dissonance, rapidly moving notes, and a strikingly aggressive tone. The two different styles also serve to "reconcile" two of my own influences - the overly dramatic Romanticism of the early 20th Century and the driving rock sounds of the late 80s (a la Guns N' Roses). The music allows the performer opportunities to make these various expression his or her own throughout the constant juxtapositions of the piece.
Performance time: ~ 6 min.
