All in Good Time
As far as I’m aware, band directors are wizards. They take a large group of unruly children on their way into adolescence and somehow get them to cooperate long enough to make music together. And, as if that’s not enough, they go through this same process year after year throughout high school and college band programs all over the world, slowly molding those children into young adults, and, along the way, giving them memories and life lessons that will stay with them forever.
Packed with an exciting collage of motifs and melodies that are reminiscent of school songs, fight songs, and the “stand tunes” we’ve all played, All in Good Time celebrates these stories, experiences, and the great impact of music education (and educators!) on students by inviting everyone to join in the party. Just as a director corrals a young group of “dignified” horn players, disruptive trumpet players, and the chattering woodwind sections into a band, All in Good Time gives everyone a chance to be themselves as they grow together over the years and start to shout together as a band.
This piece is dedicated to my first band director – Jeff Jones – and the students of the Flower Mound Marcus High School band.
